December 22nd 2006 CHRISTMAS EVE SCHEDULE: Christmas Eve is going to be a bit different this year because it falls on a Sunday. That means there will be regular Sunday services in the morning and then the Christmas Eve service in the evening. I would be thrilled if you would go to both the morning and evening services and I think you would get a lot out of it. But if you must choose one please come to the main Christmas Eve service at 6:00pm. The kids in the pageant and adults in choir and who have planned the pageant have been working their fingers to the bone for weeks now. There will be candles and bells and carols and all the things you remember and love about Christmas Eve, just a little earlier. Come and let's worship the Lord together as we begin the celebration of his birthday. Here is the schedule:

December 15th, 2006 CHRISTMAS EVE SCHEDULE: Christmas Eve is going to be a bit different this year because it falls on a Sunday. Come and let's worship the Lord together as we begin the celebration of his birthday.

December 8th, 2006  BAPTISM BY IMMERSION: There will be two baptisms this Sunday. Rita DeGroat (5 years old) who has been coming to Good Shepherd with her dad, Ken Degroat, for the last four months has asked to be baptized by immersion. That means we will fully submerge her in blessed water. The first part of the 10:30am service will be held in the parish hall and will include both Rita's baptism by immersion and Rowan Kennedy's Baptism done in the normal way. It should be an exciting day at Good Shepherd, I hope you will join us and invite your friends.

December 1st, 2006 A NOTE ABOUT SUNDAY SCHOOL: Thank you to everyone for keeping Sunday School attendance up. You simply cannot underestimate the importance of bringing your kids to Christian education Sunday morning. The best way to ensure that your kids know Christ and are not led astray in the future is to insure that they are exposed to and hear the gospel regularly and know the bible. Knowing Jesus is so much better than anything else the world has to offer. But how can they know him, if you don't speak about your own faith and regularly put them under good biblical teaching? It is vital, so much more vital in fact than any sport or educational activity. While those may benefit your son or daughter for a time, Christ and his Word are eternal.

There were no Weekly Updates Published between November 10th and the end of the month due to a conference that the senior pastor attended and the Thanksgiving holidays.

November 10th, 2006 EVANGELISM WALKABOUT : We are starting to plan for our next evangelism walkabout. For those who are new to Good Shepherd, here's how it works. First a team of volunteers makes bread in the church oven. Then another team places the bread in small paper bags along with some information about the church, a bible verse (“I am the bread of life”) and a brochure with the gospel message. Then all the volunteers split up into as many delivery teams as we can (at least two per team) and fan out through the neighborhood knocking on doors and handing out the bags. This makes it very easy to be an evangelist. All you have to do is smile and give away free homemade bread. Last time we delivered bread to about 400 homes. If you'd like to volunteer for this project, there will be a sign-up sheet downstairs. We are tentatively scheduling it for December 9th . Details will be on the sign-up sheet.

November 3rd, 2006 NEW ADULT EDUCATION SERIES: HEROES OF THE BIBLE : In this series we will trace the lives of men and women who through faith “conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them.” (Hebrews 11:33-38)

October 27th, 2006 The Next family and friends Sunday is scheduled for Sunday November 12 th . Last Family and Friends Sunday we only had one guest. I know we can do a lot better than that. Good Shepherd has experienced tremendous growth this year…over 20 new members. That growth has come from God by way of your personal evangelism: sharing your faith in Jesus Christ and asking your friends and neighbors to come to church. Evangelism is fundamental to the Christian walk. God has blessed us with abundance. Let's not grow complacent or proud. Instead, let's return to the Harvest field ready to seek more lost people for Christ and through Christ. Along with a guest, please plan to bring a covered dish for lunch.

October 20th, 2006: We are starting to plan for our next evangelism walkabout. For those who are new to Good Shepherd, here's how it works. First a team of volunteers makes bread in the church oven. October 13th, 2006 The Update is going to be very short this morning. I spent four hours yesterday working on it and then left the computer on all night (bad move) without saving it (really bad move). This morning I finished it and then went to save it. I clicked the wrong button and closed the document. The program asked me: “do you want to save your changes?” By force of habit, I clicked “no”. The Update disappeared. It was gone. I tried to retrieve it but only found a very early and incomplete version…about a sentence long, not worth building on.

October 6th, 2006 It's been confirmed. Good Shepherd's worship service will be video taped (digitally) and broadcast to thousands of people this coming Sunday. Anglican TV is an Anglican video network broadcasting on the internet. The founder, Kevin Kallsen, will be here to interview me, video the sermon, and probably other parts of the service. A lot of Anglicans from all over the world watch Anglican TV pretty regularly since it is the only broadcasting outfit going.

September 29th, 2006 It was great to sit down and eat with my church family for Family and Friends Sunday. BUT , there were more guests the Sunday prior to Family and Friends Sunday than there were on Family and Friends Sunday! I love you all. You are wonderful people. Jesus loves you. But he wants more of you! There are lost people out there who do not know Jesus Christ. All believers are called to share their faith. Inviting someone to church is the easiest form of evangelism. C'mon guys, you can do a lot better than that!

September 22nd, 2006 If you are not in a bible study or you have been but have, well, kinda faded away this fall is a great time to start or return. God speaks and leads you directly through his Word. The bible is essential for growth, peace and strength. It is food for your spirit. With it, you grow and mature in a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Without, you'll starve. All members of Good Shepherd, especially those in leadership, are encouraged to participate in at least one bible study or Christian education program a week. Several of our bible studies have run throughout the summer, but a few: Tuesday Morning, the New Beginners, the Women's Bible Study have taken a break. All three have just restarted, so it would be great to get into them as soon as possible. The others, Men't Bible Study and Breakfast and First Light are ongoing and you can also join them at any time.

September 8th, 2006 Last Sunday Justin Almeida and Micah Towery sat down with a Good Shepherd search committee to interview for the positions of music director and musician. They have played and directed all summer and the music has been simply glorious. Justin has been hired as our music director and Micah has been hired as our musician. Congratulations to both of you and thank you for serving the Lord and his Church in this way.

September 1st, 2006 Good Morning. Well, this is the first official update in about three weeks. I've enjoyed my vacation, but I'm eager to get back to work. I'm looking forward to an exciting fall. I believe God has some wonderful and challenging things in store for us this year.

August 4th, 2006 It's summer and churches don't generally grow during the summer, but God has blessed Good Shepherd again with two new families. The first is the Franks family: Nick Franks and his four sons (I'm still getting confused with their names). The four sons will be baptized at Good Shepherd on the 13th of August. On that same day we will baptize the daughter of Ken Degroat. In all, we are welcoming 7 new members ,5 of whom will be baptized on Sunday morning August 13th. That's next Sunday. So far this year we've welcomed 19 new parishioners, many of whom have invited Jesus into their hearts for the very first time this year. Thanks be to God.

July 21st, 2006 You know Good Shepherd is alive and growing when you see the pews full in July. Last Sunday we were in the 90's temperature wise but we had about 80 people in church...and that with many of our regulars on vacation. That is great considering our average is 70 and our summer average is in the 60's or lower. This summer has been consistently good when it comes to attendance. You are really taking seriously God's Word not to neglect the fellowship of believers: "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25)

July 14th, 2006 I really intended to get this out sooner than now for a whole host of reasons, the first being I haven't started writing my sermon yet and, as I glance at the clock I realize it is already 3:30pm on Friday. I've studied all week for it, but the writing is always the most excruciating part. You never know when or whether God will give you something to say, so you just plunge in and start writing. Eventually, he comes along and helps, but sometimes he likes to make you sweat first. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those times.

July 7th, 2006 Apart from the flood, you might notice that there is no weekly article this week. Instead I have written a letter to the parish that you should recieve Monday or Tuesday. The letter concerns a very important vestry meeting that was held this Wednesday. Some crucial issues were discussed regarding what took place at General Convention and the vestry came to a common mind. We will be sharing information about the intention of the vestry and inviting your questions and comments at two informal parish meetings coming up on the dates listed below.

June 23rd, 2006 It is great to be back in Binghamton and back at Good Shepherd. I really missed you guys, especially on Sunday. This is not really a Weekly Update. I'm too tired for that. I just wanted to let you know that I'm back and give you some news. If you don't know what happened at General Convention and you want a short summary, a good place to start is Fr. Creighton Evan's letter to his congregation which gives a good round up.

If you want more detail, try Stand Firm (the publication I report for)

http://www.standfirminfaith.com/index.php/site/index

Or titusonenine were you will find a compendium of all news reports and articles written about the GC:

http://www.titusonenine.classicalanglican.net/

In addition, I will be giving a talk between services and during the sermon on Sunday, explaining what happened.

June 9th, 2006, As you know I will be heading off to General Convention next week. Actually, I will leave Sunday after the picnic and hope to arrive in Columbus OH before midnight. Convention starts on Tuesday. I will be publishing nightly updates for Stand Firm and on Good Shepherd's website. I will also send out email Updates with breaking news. Here are some other sites to follow during the convention...

June 2nd, 2006 This Sunday, June 4th, is Pentecost , the day the Holy Spirit first filled the disciples and filled them with the power to preach the gospel. It is also Solemn Communion Sunday, the Sunday the first communion/solemn communion class graduates. Some of them will be taking communion for the first time. The entire group has spent the last couple of months thinking about the Lord's presence in their lives and his presence in the church through Holy Communion. Please come and celebrate Pentecost and Solemn Communion together with the kids and praise God for sending his Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of all who believe.

May 19th, 2006  THE DA VINCE CODE opens this week. As you know the book purports to be a “historical” novel. In other words the dialogue and action is fictional, but the author (Dan Brown) claims that the historical setting and background is accurate. In the book he claims that the Church has hidden the truth about Jesus for 1600 years; that Jesus is not really divine; that he was married to and had children with Mary Magdalene and that the Church has “covered up” the true story by editing the bible and cutting out those books that told the truth. Of course anyone who knows anything about New Testament history and the way the bible was written and received by the Church, knows that these claims would be comedic were they not so readily believed by an innocent and uninformed public.

May 12th, 2006  Well, next month is the event we've been anticipating for three years, the 75th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. It will very possibly be the most important General Convention ever held. The Episcopal Church has been asked by the rest of the Anglican Communion to accept the recommendations of the Windsor report and pull back from the unbiblical decisions of the last General Convention in 2003 with regard to human sexuality or risk expulsion. To do this the Episcopal Church must express regret for breaking the bonds of affection that exist between all Anglican provinces, place a moratorium on any future consecrations of non-celibate homosexual bishops, and agree to a moratorium on same sex blessings.

May 5th, 2006 GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY: Is this Sunday. Every year Good Shepherd celebrates her founding, fellowship and mission on the South-side by eating a lot of food and hanging out. This year will be no different. You are all invited to join us this Sunday between services for the Good Shepherd Day Brunch!

April 28th, 2006 We've had an excellent year so far and we've welcomed several new faces (11 to be exact) since January. Some of these are not only new to Good Shepherd, but new believers in Jesus Christ as well. Thanks be to God for bringing more and more people to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and thanks be to God that he is doing it here at Good Shepherd. Here is a brief list of some of the new faces you might see around...

April 7th, 2006 On Easter Sunday I'll be presenting a special one time only Adult education class on the resurrection. All four gospels claim that Jesus rose from the dead in the flesh. But some modern critics dismiss the biblical account. How can we answer these critics and demonstrate the historical validity of the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Come to Adult Education on Sunday Morning and find out! Invite your friends.

March 31st, 2006 I want to thank everyone who has been praying for the growth of Good Shepherd and, of course, to thank God. We've added 7 new members since Christmas. That is a pretty steep growth rate for our sized parish. If the same rate continues through the year we'll add 28 new members. You can do it. God can do it. The important thing, of course, is not simply to add bodies to our church, but to add souls to the kingdom of God.

February 3rd, 2006 Be sure to participate in every aspect of the service. Again, you are great when it comes to this kind of thing, so I'm not telling you anything you don't already know and do, but I do want to remind you and encourage you in this because it is especially important that day to sing with gusto, to pray the prayers earnestly, to respond with a full voice where appropriate (ie: when I say: “The Lord be with you.” be sure to speak up boldly with “And also with you!”).

January 13th, 2004 Good Morning! As you probably know by now, Anne has been sick all week with thrush, which is some sort of throat infection that makes her feel horrible. She hasn't been able to swallow or speak. Thank you for all of your prayers and to everyone who offered to lend a hand. She is asleep right now which is a very good thing because she hasn't had much of it this week.

January 6th, 2004 Good Morning! I hope everybody is doing well this Friday morning? I'm not sure how I'm doing because I'm not actually writing this on Friday morning, but Thursday morning. In any case, hope you have recovered from the Christmas/New Year's food/gift/shopping/family/food/traffic/in-laws/mall/food/etc glut. Anne and I are not yet fully recovered.

December 23rd, 2005 Before anything else, I want to reiterate just how deeply touched Anne and I were by your gift to us last week. You must have read our minds. We missed the Blazer so much and given the latest developments, we need a second car more than ever. Your gift came just at the right time. We will never forget you and the love that you have shown us this year. We are so very happy here. May God bless you all as much as you have blessed us.

December 16th, 2005 Thank you to everyone who gave time, effort, and/or financial support to this project. We reached about 400 homes with warm bread and the good news of Jesus Christ. On a personal note, I want to say that I was so very proud to be your pastor last Saturday. You are such a wonderful group of believers. You are not content to keep the good news to yourselves, but you are committed to taking the love of Christ to the lonely, lost, and hurting people on the Southside. I thank God for each of you and for the maturity, commitment and faithfulness you demonstrated. That is what the bible means by bearing fruit! Thank you and thanks be to God.

December 9th 2005 Anne and I along with the entire vestry have been so very encouraged and thankful for the way you have stepped forward to support the mission of Good Shepherd through your hands-on hard work; through your fantastic participation in worship, Christian education, and bible study; through your prayers; and through your monetary gifts to the victims of the Tsunami, Hurricanes, and the Shepherd's Bowl.

December 2nd 2005 Good Morning! I hope you are not already too stressed by the Christmas prep? Anne and I are almost there and Thanksgiving was just last week. Oh well, tis the season. God is good. The weekly article is below and below that you'll find the rest of the update. Enjoy!

November 25th, 2005 Since Advent is the church season set aside to prepare and anticipate the coming of the Lord, many of the readings will take us back to the time before Jesus’ birth when the prophets, the last being John the Baptist, predicted the coming of the Messiah to rescue and redeem God’s people. Others will remind us that we, here and now, should be living lives of preparation because Jesus is coming again to establish his Kingdom over all the earth. We should be ready to meet him at any time.

November 18th, 2005 Good Morning. This is the first official update since we returned from Texas and it will be the first posted on the web in a week. For some reason we were not able to access the web upload page from Texas. Oh well, information will be updated on the website today and throughout the weekend.

October 21st, 2005 If you haven't already noticed, there is a new “articles” section on the website homepage. Under the section title you will find many articles new and old. I'll be adding new articles and postings to that section on a regular basis (every week is my goal but I might skip a week here and there). Why? Well, I'll use the articles section to address theological issues and themes by topic. It's good to have a venue to discuss a broad range of interesting topics and ideas that might not always come up at bible study, Christian Ed, or in a sermon. So far, I've written articles on the process of Sanctification, the Atonement, the parish mission and goals for the year and much more.

October 14th, 2005 I light of the success of this program, I am going to organize a new beginners bible study for a new crop of students. If you are interested in the beginner's program and would like to participate, please let me know. If you were a member of the first beginner's bible class but had to drop out for any reason, you are invited to join this one.

October 7th, 2005 This coming Wednesday evening at 7:00pm, our friends from the Messianic Jewish community (Jewish people who believe in Jesus Christ) will celebrate Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in the sanctuary at Good Shepherd. This is the day Christian Jews remember and repent of their sins and celebrate the fact that Jesus, their messiah and ours, died on the cross to atone for the sins of the whole world.

September 30th, 2005  When you pray, you allow the Spirit of God to work in you in ways so deep and so fundamental that most times you cannot even perceive or imagine what he has done or what he is doing until you wake up one day and realize that you are a completely different person. A consistent disciplined daily life of prayer is a life opened and receptive to hearing God's voice and experiencing God's power.

September 23rd, 2005 One difference between modern people and ancient people is the emphasis we moderns put on feelings. Feelings of love or compassion or loyalty are seen as indicators of character. If you feel love for people then, you are a loving person. If you feel loyalty toward a group or a nation, then you are a loyal person. If you feel compassion toward the sick or poor, then you are a compassionate person. To the ancients however, actions, not feelings, revealed a person's character...

September 16th, 2005 Faith involves your body, heart, soul, and mind . You must truly know Jesus before you can truly love him. Think about a married couple. Before a man and woman can commit to love, honor, and serve one another, they must go through a process of learning. Neither partner can marry someone he or she doesn't truly know.

September 9th, 2005 I don't have as much time to write as I'd like this week, but there is a lot of new news and information below, so please read carefully...

September 2nd, 2005  Good Morning. What a horrible week for the people of the Gulf Coast. As I write this, there is almost complete anarchy in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levy breaks. On the one hand the people who sought shelter in the Superdome are spending their days and nights in inhuman filth. On the other the people who have yet to make it to safety live under constant threat from violent gangs of looters, hunger, thirst, diseased waters, and oppressive heat.

August 26th, 2005 Anne and I have been waking up a little earlier the last couple of weeks. We got into the habit of eating together (with Emma and Aedan of course) for every meal in Africa and we've been trying to keep it up now that we're back. It doesn't always pan out, but most mornings we get up and finish our prayers and exercises in time to have breakfast. It sure has made a difference in our ability to deal with busy days.

August 19th, 2005  If last year was a rebuilding year, then this year will, by the grace of God, be a year of expansion and growth. Over the last 12 months our Christian education, music, worship program, and bible-studies have not only been rebuilt, but they have all been blessed by the Holy Spirit and become strong, healthy, and thriving programs. Most of all, the church (by this I mean all of us together) has become more deeply rooted in the Word of God; more united to Christ and to each other through common worship and the sacraments; and as a result, more and more alive in Jesus Christ.

August 16th, 2005 Well, we're back and we are very glad to be home. Vacation was wonderful and we feel very rested, but we missed you and missed our home and we're ready to get back to work. And, since there hasn't been an update for a while, and not one on the web for some time due to technical difficulties, I thought it might be nice to publish a mini-Update this week to get everyone up to speed.

There has been a necessary break in publishing the July updates due to technical difficulties. When these are resolved the remaining July updates will be published.

July 1st, 2005 We are busily plugging along this week. What with our upcoming trip to Africa, this week's Vacation Bible School and everything else, it doesn't seem at all like things have slowed down a bit this Summer, which is good. It keeps us on our toes. And the heat is good too. It'll get us ready for Africa.

June 24th, 2005 Good Morning, not much time today. I am getting this Update out a little later than usual because I'm swamped. It is short but it is here!

June 17th, 2005 Good Morning! Lot’s of news this week so be sure to read everything carefully

June 10th, 2005 I want to start this morning with a section of an article I found on prayer and unbelief at Lent and Beyond a devotional website...

June 3rd, 2005 I hope and pray that this week's Update finds you all doing well. Emma, Aedan, and I are sitting here, together. They have both apparently decided that the world is far too fearsome. Instead of their usual morning routine of tearing apart the play room toy by toy, they have spent the morning on my lap, Emma on left and Aedan on the right; both children strangely insecure. They're clinging to my torso like baby monkeys.

May 27th, 2005  What a wonderful few weeks we've had! Weddings, baptisms, solemn communion, generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure…thanks be to God. Let's not forget the true Author of all these blessings and remember to stay faithful to him as he is always faithful us.

May 20th, 2005 The Trinity, the fact that God is one in Being and three in Person is one of those wonderful things we would never know about unless God chose to reveal it to us. He made this revelation in Jesus Christ. And Jesus is revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures.

April 22, 2005

March 18th, 2005 This Sunday is Palm Sunday . It is the day Jesus processed into Jerusalem on a donkey and was greeted by crowds of people waving Palm branches (you can read more about it here or, better yet here: Matthew 20:1-11)

March 11th, 2005  Vestry retreat…Lenten retreat…Holy week coming up….Lent in general…flue season…Emma…Aedan…I'm swamped. More commentary next week. For now…here's the news

March 4th, 2005 Well, there's lots of news and not as much time to chat as I'd like so I'll just skip the preliminaries and move on to the news. Busy days at Good Shepherd coming up, Holy Week, baptisms, new classes, retreats….

February 18th, 2005 How are you doing? Have you kept to your Lenten discipline? If you haven't don't worry. Don‘t let guilt or hyper-perfectionism make you throw in the towel. Just pick yourself up, dust off, re-commit, and keep going.

February 11th, 2005

Next time you see him at church, just watch how he behaves in the nursery. He becomes positively immobile. At home he finds ways to move from one point to another quite well and with great 10-month old ingenuity. But when he's surrounded by women in the nursery he is suddenly “forgets” how to get around and must be carried about like a sack of potatoes from place to place.

February 4th, 2005                                                                                                    The only positive thing about pink eye is that other than your eyes, you don‘t feel all that bad. Sure you can't see at a distance all that well and bright light makes your eyes feel like they are about to shrivel up into little dry raisons but other than that you're fine. This means there is plenty of time to read (in a dimly lit room) and write.

January 28th 2005                                                                                                   There are lots of great things going on at Good Shepherd at the moment. If only the good Lord might see fit to give us a break from the snow we could all dig out and see them. A new floor has been laid in the nursery, a new carpet installed in the atrium, and the piano has finally arrived from Conklin Avenue Baptist Church and will soon be cleaned, tuned and in good working order. It is exciting to see how God is laying the groundwork for growth at Good Shepherd and I'm looking forward to a year of great worship, deepening faith, continuing bible study, warm fellowship and dedicated evangelism.

On Thursday we finally went to the doctor who gave Anne and me this ointment that we're supposed to rub on the inner eye-lid of each child's eye. I don't know if you've ever tried rubbing ointment on an eight-month old baby's eye-lid or a toddler for that matter, but I've discovered that there are few things in this universe more powerful than Aedan's eye-lids.

Many of you are reading this on Friday, others on Sunday, but if you get a chance this week, remember to thank the outgoing vestry class and all those who served on vestry this year. They all deserve the gratitude of the entire church for their faithfulness and dedication.

Update December 17th, 2004                                                                 Emma looked confused, pointed up again and declared “God! Sky!” with a little less confidence. “Yes,” I confirmed, “God is in the sky. God is also here with us on the ground too.” I don't think she heard that last part though. She was staring up into the sky saying “God!” “God!”...

Update December 3rd, 2004                                                                                        So what is advent anyway and what does it mean for us? Blue is the traditional color of Advent. One reason we use blue is because blue the color of the sky just as dawn begins to break after a long dark night. That is a good description of Advent too, the beginning of the dawn. Coming right before Christmas Advent is the time of the year that all believers 1. Repent in preparation for the second coming of Christ (the new dawn) 2. Reflect on the Old Testament prophecies that foretold his first coming in Bethlehem 2000 years ago (the first light) and 3. Prepare for the celebration of Christmas.

Update November 12th, 2004                                                                                        Good Morning. In a terrible rush this morning so there is very little by way of opening comments, but a lot of important info below. God bless you all!
