Update March 14th, 2008

Dear Good Shepherd,

We are entering the time of the Church year when we remember the last week of Jesus life and the events leading up to his crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection.

The worship, teaching and preaching this week will all focus on the saving work of Christ. That means it is the perfect time to invite non-believing friends and family to church.

We've grown quite a bit in the last year, adding 22 new members. This is wonderful. But only two of those new members are new believers. That means that while we may be growing Good Shepherd, we are not necessarily growing the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said that if anyone repents and believes and trusts in him, he will be saved. That means that not only will he live with Christ in his heart during this present life, but that he will recieve eternal life and then take part in the New Heaven and New Earth Jesus will establish after the Resurrction.

But, asks Paul, "How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." (Romans 10:14-18)

Life is short and precious. It is vital that the gospel be shared with those who are closest to you before it is too late, and, unfortunately, you never know when "too late" may be.

At the very least, take a look at the Holy Week schedule and invite your non-Christian friends and family to one or more of the services listed.

The only service that would not be appropriate for this purpose will be Tenebrae which, though beautiful, is a service without teaching or a sermon and non-believers may not understand it.

There will be opportunities and invitations this week to repent and surrender to Christ. I pray that you will condsider carefully and take the often difficult step to talk to someone about Jesus Christ and invite them to worship.

EWS :

FR. NIGEL MUMFORD: Will be visiting Good Shepherd THIS WEEKEND, Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th of March, to lead a seminar on healing prayer. Fr. Mumford is a former member of the British special forces and now serves as an Anglican minister in the Diocese of Albany. He is well known nationally and internationally for his healing ministry. Dolly Shaller is sponsoring this event.

The seminar will begin on Friday evening (the 14th) with a healing service at 7:00pm and it will continue Saturday morning 10:00am and after-noon with a workshop and another service. The seminar will end at 3:00pm on Saturday the 15th.

PALM SUNDAY THIS SUNDAY:

Palm Sunday is the first worship Service of Holy Week and it is one of the most important celebrations of the whole year. Holy Week is the week believers remember and celebrate the last week of Jesus' life. That week began with Jesus' triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem . By this time, Jesus was a celebrity. Everyone knew him and most people believed that he was the messiah, the coming savior of Israel . So when they heard he was coming they all rushed out waving palm branches and crying “Hosanna in Highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Waving Palm branches was the first century equivalent of those foam “#1” signs you see at football games. It meant, “This is the king.” Of course, after they really got to know Jesus and figured out that he was not the savior they thought he would be (i.e. that he wasn't going to get rid of the Romans) their enthusiasm died. In fact, five days later the very same people who greeted Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna” screamed for his death with cries of “Crucify Him!”

Palm Sunday Services at Good Shepherd will be held at 8:00am and 10:30am as usual. They will begin with the blessing of the Palms. Then the blessed palms will be passed out to everyone in the congregation and we'll process into the church like Jesus' processed into Jerusalem (except for the donkey). During the service The Passion will be read and narrated.

THANK YOU FROM THE ECW: ECW extends our sincere THANK YOU to all of you that help make the clam chowder, sit up the parish hall, baked, worked on Saturday, and, of course, all you that bought.  We sold all of the baked goods!!  Though, we still have a few quarts of delicious clam chowder to sell.  They will be able on Sunday after both services!  Again  THANK YOU!!

ECW NAME CHANGE: Name change....The importance of an active women's group at the Church of Good Shepherd has been apparent since 1870's. At that time the group was called The Sewing Society. They felt responsibility for doing special work that was needed for Good Shepherd or to raise money to help with the church's finances, which are both still true today! The women's group's name as been changed a number of times in the last 135 years. Now, it is time, once again, for a new name! ECW (Episcopal Church Women) will now be called ACW (Anglican Church Women). ACW meets the second Tuesday of the month with a meeting at 10:00 followed by a pot luck luncheon. Come and join us!!!

THREE NOTES FROM ANNE+

1. LAST SUPPER CELEBRATION: Every Palm Sunday in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd we celebrate the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples with the children. All children are invited and encouraged to bring friends. We'll eat Matzo and drink grape juice and enjoy each others company while remembering Jesus and his great work of dying on the cross for us. Please be on time ( 9:15 ) so that we can enjoy the whole hour together. See you there!

2. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: The children in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the Jr. High group, as well as several adults, have spent the last three weeks preparing for the Stations of the Cross. Each stations has been rewritten in our own words and illustrated. This should make the service this year fresh, vibrant and beautiful. I hope you all will come this year to meditate on our Lord's Passion and see the work of the children.

3. IRON SHEPHERD: Saturday, April 5 th starting (I hope) at 4:30 Matt and I (Anne) will be competing against each other in the cooking of (probably) 3 dishes in one hour. At 4:30 John and Pauline King will unveil to us a secret ingredient from which we will each have to cook three dishes. The cooking will start at 5, lasting till 6 at which point our food will be judged by a panel. I'm working out some kinks still, but hopefully by the 5 th it will all fall into place. When you come bring three things. 1. A friend. 2. 5 dollars so that it looks like a fund raiser. 3. A Dish to Pass because Matt and I aren't that good. Everyone will be able to taste our food but if there isn't More food we'll all go hungry. See you There!

BABY BOTTLE COLLECTION REMINDER: If you have been saving your change for the Life Choices Center (used to be the All Women's Help Center) to help mothers who have decided not to have abortions but who need assistance, please bring your bottles back THIS SUNDAY, Palm Sunday, March 16th.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED: One of our Shepherd's Bowl teams has recently lost two volunteers, a man and a woman.. The team is now left with only one female server in the evening. We desperately need at least two volunteers to step in and at least one of them must be male. It is dangerous for a woman or women to serve the meals by themselves. The commitment would be for one Thursday evening a month. If you are interested please call the office or the rectory.

We are also now short of two cleaning teams. There used to be 4 teams of volunteers to help clean the church, one team on duty each week. We are now down to 2 teams. This is not good.

Please do step up to help if you are able.

UPDATE: We've now had one family and one volunteer for the Cleaning teams and another volunteer for the Shepherd's Bowl. Thank you for stepping up. I pray there will be more.

LENT: READ THE NEW TESTAMENT IN 40 DAYS: This Lent, I've challenged Good Shepherd to commit to read the entire New Testament in 40 Days. You may find the reading schedule and daily devotions here:

http://www.binghamtongoodshepherd.com/40days.shtml

WEDNESDAY NOON EUCHARIST: THE FINAL NOON COMMUNION OF LENT WILL BE THIS COMING WEEK, HOLY WEEK.

PRACTICE FOR THE EASTER VIGIL will be held during Easter Week. Stay Tuned

ACOLYTE PRACTICE: After the 10:30am service. One of our acolytes who is old enough has asked to be trained as a LEM. Part of his training will occur in conjunction with the Acolyte practice this Sunday.

EASTER FLOWERS: Flyers are in the pews for Easter Flowers.  Please use full names.  Flowers can also be given in thanks for blessings received and for living as well as deceased loved ones.  If anyone has any questions about where the money is going, please see me.

THE VESTRY RETREAT NEWS: I will be sharing the results of the Vestry Retreat after Holy Week. The vestry decided on a great and ambitious ministry and mission plan for 2008 that I will present both in writing and during Christian education in the coming weeks.

SERMON & PODCASTING INFORMATION: All recent sermons may be downloaded at the Good

Shepherd podcast site

SERMON INFORMATION: If you would like to study ahead for this Sunday's sermon, be sure to read the Gospel of Matthew 26:36 through the entire 27th chapter.

BIBLE STUDY:
THE THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
will not meet during Holy Week. The others have yet to be decided.

YOUTH INFORMATION FROM MICAH : This is the weekend of the senior high youth group ski trip . If you did not receive a release/permission form, please email Micah or ask your sr. higher what they did with theirs! We will be meeting at the church at 7 AM! Early, I know, but it's worth it. Please don't forget your money, and to wear something warm. It is not a bad idea to check the internet to see what the conditions will be like. It is not supposed to be extremely cold, but hopefully it won't be warm, either. Pray the weather works to our advantage. Call me with any questions: 607-621-2876 .

Jr. high will meet on regular schedule on Sunday. Parents, please remember to help your kids bring friends. It's very hard for middle schoolers to plan on things like youth group, especially if their parents aren't involved. Please remember this. Call the parents of your child's friends and ask them if their kids need rides. It's not too hard, and could actually go a long way towards helping the Jr. high youth group grow.

ADULT EDUCATION SERIES:
DOCTRINE AND DIVISIONS IN THE CHURCH
We'll be starting a brand new Christian Education series this Sunday that will focus on what has and continues to divide Christians from one another. In John 17 Jesus prayed that his Church would be One. Has Jesus' prayer gone unanswered? Why are Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Evangelical believers not all gathered together in one visible body? What are the reasons for our divisions and distinctions? We'll begin in the early centuries of the Church and progress through the Great Schism between east and west, to the Reformation, the Radical Reformation, and finally to our own day. We'll discuss the distinctives of the different denominations and focus on some Anglican distinctives as well. It promises to be an exciting series. I hope you will join us.

HAVE YOU…. shared your faith with a friend? The vestry has challenged all of us to share our faith in Jesus Christ with at least one non-believer each month.

Good News for the Week

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”  (Luke 9:23-27)
